In my studio I begin with photos I have taken or with my sketch books. Since composition is everything to me, I make some value study sketches to get a better idea of how the finished painting may look. I then determine what size canvas or panel I want to use for the scene and begin to rough in the composition, sometimes in charcoal and often with very thin paint. The finished painting may take day(s) or even weeks for larger more complex pieces.
